DR. MICHAEL P. PENNACHIO: Astigmatism mainly just causes blurry vision, less than clear vision. When patients are young, it's primarily problems with distance. As you get older, it can be distance and near. And the options of how to treat it, whether it's glasses, contacts, laser refractive surgery or implants depends on the individual patient and their needs.
If patients just want to see better with glasses, correcting astigmatism with glasses is no different than any other refractive error. Easily tolerated, patients do very well. Contacts, there are options with rigid contact lenses, soft contact lenses.
Fitting is usually relatively straightforward. Good outcomes. Laser refractive surgery, similarly good outcomes. Fast recovery period. Patients do very well. The newest options are correcting astigmatism - - cataract surgery. Some of the newer implants are very successful with that. And the experience of the patient is essentially no different than a standard operation.
