DR. MICHAEL P. PENNACHIO: Glaucoma can affect any age. You can be born with glaucoma. In our practice, primarily it's the older generation. And that's the group that has the most risk for glaucoma.
Fortunately, one nice thing about ophthalmology in our practice is that usually one can tell in one office visit whether there's a problem there. I can initiate treatment immediately.
Glaucoma is very similar to high blood pressure in that the treatment shouldn't affect your lifestyle. And also, it's a preventative strategy. You don't wait until there's a problem. So with Glaucoma, the idea is with early diagnosis and treatment to prevent disability.
Fortunately, glaucoma and most glaucomas are easily treated. The most common kind, open angle glaucoma, is usually treated with medicated eye drops. It's important in glaucoma to have continued ongoing care to monitor the effectiveness of treatment.
New technologies, as far as newer diagnostic tests, imaging tests are important in the management of glaucoma. And we're fortunate here to have some of the latest technologies in managing glaucoma.
