DR. CRAIG D. FISHMAN: I think the two things you want is you want someone, obviously, to be competent, but you also want them to care. I mean, you want them to have a personal connection, not only to yourself, but also to the profession and to eye care in general.
And it's very important to me on a personal and a professional level. Always has been.
My grandfather went blind from glaucoma. From a young age, I saw eye care in a very personal level. That was probably the first interest I had in it. Macular degeneration also runs in my family.
So these are two eye diseases that are very close to me. Going through schooling, it was just I gravitated towards it. It was something that interested me more than anything else. I really can't imagine doing anything else.
You know, my kids ask me that type of stuff all the time. If you weren't an ophthalmologist what would you do? I'm really not sure, you know. But this, for me, was a natural progression in my life. And I'm very happy I chose this field.
And specifically, I'm happy I chose this location as well.
