Glaucoma Surgery Leesburg, Eustis, Clermont
Protect Yourself from Eye DiseaseMany people with glaucoma are not aware of their asymptomatic condition. Therefore, individuals who are over the age 50 and haven’t had an eye exam in the past couple of years, or have a family history of glaucoma or other eye diseases, are encouraged to schedule a screening at Total Eye Care Center. If diagnosed with the disease, our doctors will present your treatment options, including medications and laser glaucoma surgery. Contact Total Eye Care Center, serving Leesburg, Eustis, Clermont, and the surrounding areas, to schedule an appointment.
Glaucoma Causes
Glaucoma is a group of diseases caused by progressive optic nerve damage in the eye, leading to damage of the optic nerve. The optic nerve is located near the back of the eye and is responsible for transmitting the images captured by the eye to the brain for interpretation. Glaucoma occurs when the optic nerve is damaged by a certain level of intraocular pressure. When the pressure exerted by this fluid becomes too high, the optic nerve may be hurt beyond repair. As a result, a person may experience an asymptomatic loss of peripheral vision. Without proper treatment, glaucoma often leads to blindness.
In many cases, topical drugs are effective in relieving pressure in the eye. If the eyes do not respond to drops, however, glaucoma surgery may be necessary to drain the excess fluid.
Glaucoma Prevention
Scheduling regular check-ups with your ophthalmologist can help you to prevent long-term problems associated with glaucoma. Surgery may not be necessary if the disease is detected in its earliest stages. People who are over the age of 50, diabetic, of African descent, or who have a family history of glaucoma or other eye disorders are particularly encouraged to schedule routine glaucoma screenings. Early diagnosis can help protect you from permanent nerve damage and vision loss. General check-ups and glaucoma screenings are available at the Leesburg, Eustis, and Clermont offices of Total Eye Care Center.
Glaucoma Types
The main types of glaucoma are primary open-angle glaucoma and closed-angleglaucoma, both characterized by increased pressure within the eye. Secondaryglaucoma is caused when another disease (e.g., diabetes) contributes to increased pressure. The most common type, open-angle glaucoma, occurs when fluid drains too slowly from the eye, resulting in excessive pressure. Normal tension glaucoma involves damage to the optic nerve despite normal intraocular pressure.
The Total Eye Care Center doctors can explain the different types of glaucoma to you and answer whatever questions you might have about the disease or treatment. Glaucoma surgery is available at our conveniently located Leesburg center.
Glaucoma Surgery and Treatment Cost
Depending on your specific case, your Total Eye Care doctor may first attempt to treat your glaucoma with medication intended to decrease pressure within your affected eye. Eye drops have been shown to be effective in many cases. If eye drops are ineffective in decreasing pressure, glaucoma surgery may be recommended. The cost of laser glaucoma surgery depends on the type of glaucoma being treated. A member of our staff would be happy to discuss specific glaucoma treatment costs with you during a consultation at one of our offices.
