Cataract Treatment Leesburg, Eustis, Clermont
Cataract refers to the clouding of the eye’s natural lens. The National Eye Institute reports more than half of Americans will develop a cataract or undergo cataract surgery by the age of 80. Fortunately, sight-restoring cataract surgery is more accessible than ever before.
Our ophthalmic surgeons provide the most advanced cataract treatment options to the people of Leesburg, Eustis, and Clermont. Proudly, Total Eye Care Center is the first surgery center in all of Lake County to dedicate itself exclusively to ophthalmic surgery. In fact, we specialize in cataract surgery.
Cataract Treatment: Before Surgery
Once diagnosed with cataracts, you will continue to meet with our doctors to determine your personal cataract treatment plan. If you are a suitable candidate for cataract surgery, your Total Eye Care Center surgeon will carefully discuss your procedure from start to finish.
Prior to surgery, your measurements and test results will be used to select your intraocular lens implant (IOL), which will ultimately replace your natural lens during surgery.
The day of surgery will call for you to arrive at our surgery center an hour early. Once you have been checked in by our welcoming coordinator, a staff member will show you to one of our two state-of-the-art surgical suites. Licensed nurses, anesthetists, and technicians will be assigned to monitor your condition. And you might be happy to learn that you can remain in your own comfortable clothes throughout the procedure!
Many of our patients are also pleased to know that the microincision made during surgery is self-sealing, so sutures will not be required. Patients are given a plastic shield to wear at night during the recovery process, and have round-the-clock access to their surgeon in Leesburg, Eustis, and Clermont.
Cataract Treatment: In the Operating Room
The surgical procedure typically takes about 10 minutes to complete. Medication will be administered intravenously, and your eyes will be anesthetized with eye drops, all with your comfort in mind.
Your surgeon will probably perform your cataract surgery using the phacoemulsification technique.
The cataract removal technique at a glance:
- Your surgeon will use sound waves, or ultrasonic fragmentation, to break up the hard nucleus in the lens.
- Once this is done, he will conduct aspiration of the lens, which means proceeding to gently “vacuum” the appropriate area using the ultrasonic device that is characteristic of phacoemulsification.
- Next, an intraocular lens will be implanted through the same microincision. Your surgeon will use expert discretion to position the artificial lens, thus replacing your natural lens.
