What Vision Conditions Can Eye Exams Detect?

January 14, 2011 @ 05:47 PM — by Total Eye Care Center

One of the most important parts of visiting an eye care specialist or any sort of eye care center is getting a proper eye exam. A comprehensive eye examination will be able to detect a whole host of vision problems and eye disorders. When you come to our Florida eye care center, our team will do their best to detect any eye health issue you may be facing. Some of the common vision conditions that we will test for are as follows.

First of all, we will check to see if you are suffering from a refractive error of any kind. A refractive error refers to common vision problems that people experience due to the way light passes through the eyes en route to the retina. These vision problems are commonly known as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. There are various treatments that can correct these refractive errors, including corrective lenses and refractive surgery.

Another major eye health condition that we will do our best to detect is glaucoma. Glaucoma is a series vision problem that involves an excess build up of pressure within the eye. This excess eye pressure can become so serious that it affects the optic nerve and results in partial or total vision loss. If we catch the glaucoma early, there are many means of  glaucoma treatment that are available to reduce the intraocular pressure, ranging from medications to surgical treatments.

Cataracts are another eye health issue that we can look for during an eye exam. Cataracts are caused by a clumping together of the proteins located in the lens of the eye. When these proteins solidify, they can cause the lens to become clouded or opaque. Cataract surgery is the surefire means of treatment, and it is quite effective at restoring vision.

There are many other eye conditions that we can detect during a comprehensive exam, so if you are interested in learning more, we encourage you to contact our eye care centers in Leesburg, Eustis, and Clermont to meet with us in person.
